Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of camera do I need?
You will need a DSLR (Digital single lens reflex) Camera or a CSC (Compact system camera, sometimes referred to as a mirrorless camera). Not a ‘Point and Shoot’ camera. If you can take the lens off your camera, and swap it for another lens, then most likely your camera is suitable. If you are in doubt, just drop us a quick email with your cameras make and model number and we will be happy to confirm. See the example photo below.

Why not a 'point and shoot'?
Point and shoot cameras are very good up to a point. (Excuse the pun.)  They are referred to as ‘point n shoots’ because they do things automatically, making decisions for you – you just point n shoot.  Sometimes it is appropriate to let the camera make decisions for you.  However to advance your photography beyond this stage, we need to be able to take back control.  Point and shoots either won’t let you take control or if they do let you take control, it is with so much mucking around that it just becomes an exercise in frustration.
Maybe at some stage in the future, if there is enough interest, we’ll run a short workshop just for people with ‘point n shots’. Things like composition and creativity are applicable to any camera.

How fit do I need to be?
To get that good shot, we often have to walk over rough terrain: farmland, down a walking track, alongside a river.  But in the end it is a photography workshop, not a hiking trip, so an ability to walk half an hour over this sort of terrain should do the trick.

I need to buy some equipment before the course.  Can I contact you for advice?
Definitely!  In fact, I would advise you to not buy any important equipment without first contacting us for advice.  A five minute phone conversation could save you a lot of money and/or equipment frustration.  Ph 03 453 5487

How much memory should I bring?
Short answer: lots.  As a rough guess I would say that 4Gb to 8Gb would see you through a morning or evening shoot.  If you have a storage device like a lap top with you, and you have the ability to transfer your photos onto this device between shoots, then the above figure should do.  If not then you will need more.
